    The origins of all roles

In northern Germany, far from any civilized population, there is a small village whose name is unknown. The village is by no means common, as some citizens have developed paranormal powers over time. A strange, unexplained mutation has occurred within the hamlet. Citizens have observed strange silhouettes roaming the town at night. For those foreigners with the different personalities of the village, each one is described here.

    Villager

Not everyone has undergone a mutation in their physical form, nor have every citizen gained paranormal senses. While they may have their importance, they are usually put back in the back row while the rest handles the more serious business. It is not known at first glance whether someone is special or just a citizen.

    Seer

After many of the townspeople mysteriously died, this person started having visions, dreams of wandering shadows. After some time they learned to control it better and can now associate the shadows with faces! They are able to identify most people's true identities, although some remain carefully concealed...

    Oracle

Fearing for his life, this person trained himself to better identify those who might be wolves. With the help of the dead, they can know if someone is a wolf or not, but they cannot know their exact identity.

    drunkard

After losing their loved one to their untimely death, this person began drinking away their problems, trying to forget and even ignore the looming threat. Most of the townsfolk are so drunk all the time and trust them with their lives until they reveal their own power to ward off the threat.

    Harlot

In times of absolute darkness, some citizens still want to have fun. The harot is one of these individuals and occasionally crashes on and sleeps with humans. They are usually trusted as they spend the whole night with another person and therefore do not arouse too much suspicion. However, sleeping with random people has consequences, and the lycanthropes could murder the harlot if visited.

    Guardian Angel

This person sensed the emerging threat long ago and tried to protect the hamlet to protect their honor. They can prevent the enemy from harming anyone and will try to use their God-granted powers to protect everyone from the sleepless peril.

    Bodyguard

This townsman has no paranormal senses, nor can he transform into anything. However, their will to protect the village from the threat is stronger than anything else, and they often use their own bodies to allow another townsman to survive, at least a little longer...

    Detective

Similar to the bodyguard, this person has no special powers. To compensate, they developed powerful insight and knowledge from their peers, which allows them to analyze some people's behavior and designate them as enemies of the village. You can always know what someone is without needing the help of higher spirits or the like. It usually takes them a whole day to identify someone, but it's always accurate. While investigating someone, they might accidentally drop a paper and some enemies might be able to pick it up and realize who the detective is.

    Augur

In these times of danger, the kindness that was once part of the village is gone. To counteract this, this townsman has started reading the auras of others. It takes time and focus, but you can always tell for sure if anyone is against the village. They see through every disguise and will always be successful in distinguishing good from evil.

    Mysticer

Shadows roam this citizen's dreams. As they have discovered over time, the shadows are not meaningless, rather they can effectively see the Hamlet's evil members, although they cannot tell who they are. They often share this information with those they trust and help their citizens get rid of all the evil in their community.

    Time Lord

Nobody really knows who this character is. They often go in and out of their house and go to an unfamiliar place. Her whereabouts are unknown, and some have reported a strange blue box on the outskirts of the village where the Time Lord has been seen. Its existence or purpose fascinates many. When the Time Lord dies, the sun moves faster across the sky, days and nights pass by without your noticing, and no one can take a quick nap. The true nature of the character is unknown.

    Matchmaker

With the possibility of quitting at any moment looming, this person decided they would take the big step and bring these two people together. From their point of view, it was obvious that both of them should be together, but neither of them ever makes the first move. For their yearning happiness and before their likely untimely death, this commoner moves forward and manages to bring them together. But they quickly realize that this might not have been the wisest move...

    Mad Scientist

This odd character conjures up chemical potions in her basement to justify herself against anyone who tries to kill her. At night they only sleep on one ear and can usually escape from their home and take a potion in the meantime in case enemies get close. However, they are too slow for the pursuers and are usually killed not without dropping their potion, potentially killing other people. They always carry one around and make sure to kill anyone they deem dangerous in case their life is in grave danger.

    Hunter

As one of the longest living members of this town, the Hunter holds a powerful weapon capable of killing anyone instantly. They will usually keep their belongings hidden to protect themselves. At night they sometimes go out of their house and go to kill someone in their sleep. The village cannot know for sure if the hunter has spare ammo, and so they often try to stay on their good side.

    Shaman

An old, wise person who comes from an unknown place. They carry what they call totems and place one on someone else's porch each night. No one really knows what these totems are or do, but the person living in the house will cast an unknown magical effect on them that will last for an unknown amount of time...

    Doctor

To counter the threat of lycanthropes and the ability to slowly transform into a lycanthrope without consent, this person has devised an effective countermeasure. You only have a few copies left and want to use them properly. Carrying them around unbeknownst to most, they can sometimes take a single individual and give them a shot. This ensures that the person dies instead of turning into a cursed enemy if they are ever bitten. You must be careful as this may have unintended effects...

    Wolf

One of the strange mutations that has happened in the village, the werewolves often outnumber them for the good of the village and use this to their advantage. The wolves try to conquer the village by incapacitating the more powerful citizens. When some other townspeople started developing powers that could counteract the wolves, they had to find a way to connect with the townsfolk. At that moment, citizens became even more wary of their enemies, who could be hidden in plain sight in the middle of the city...

    Werecrow

The black crow flying around the village has never alarmed anyone. But when the wolves appeared and instilled fear, black became a sign of evil and darkness, and everyone tried to get rid of the crow. However, it was too late as the wolves managed to recruit the crow as their own, increasing both their numbers and power as an intimidating force. The crow serves as a spy for the wolves, flying to houses overnight, seeing who might be there and relaying that information...

    wolf cub

To ensure their reign of terror lasted as long as possible, the wolves have begun raising young pups who eventually, once mature, can bring fear and paranoia into the village with more certainty than a roll of the dice. Since they are not yet adults, the adult wolves take care of them carefully. They cannot kill, but should they be killed by the village, the anger of the wolves will fuel additional killings...

    Werekitten

Another strange mutation in the village: a cat became a small werewolf. Although smaller, it will still take part in the night raids to enjoy tasty commoner meat. Due to its nature of being a little kitten, the spirits will mistakenly believe that it is completely pure, and so both the seer and the oracle will not be able to see through the true identity. Archers and the like will also fall short when it comes to the mobility of this kitty.

    Alpha Wolf

The big wolf and the holy father of all. The Alpha Wolf is the very first wolf to undergo the mutation and as such has evolved the ability to infect non-wolves and attract increasing numbers of allies to their side. When bitten by the contagious wolf, you slowly transform into an unholy werewolf and then join their cause and fight with them against the rest of the village, even their former friends and allies.

    Fallen Angel

This person was the strangest mutation that ever happened to the city. She was once a powerful, divine guardian angel. When the holy father of wolves, aptly called the alphabet, bit her, her fingers began to grow sharp claws and her wings slowly grew darker and more menacing. Their previous existence as guardians of the village is long gone and now they are working against it. Due to their even sharper claws, they can provide any protection other citizens might have and kill anyone in their way that they really want to kill.

    wolf mystic

Unlike the mystic, this person sees visions of those who are utterly opposed to the wolves. You can also kill with the other wolves, but also realize how many of the commoners have special powers. This gives them very powerful information against the citizens and can greatly change the odds of the game...

    Cultist

They are secretly looking for the wolves and although they don't know each other, the cultists will try to overpower the village together with the wolves. It is not known who is taking root in secret for which side, or how many of the townspeople are seeking evil on this scale...

    Minion

Similar to the cultist, this persona is rooted in the wolves taking over the village. However, they have learned to sneak around the village at night, being able to identify the roaming wolves and contacting them to let them know they have the same goal. While they cannot kill, they will share the wolves' victory when the time comes.

    traitor

Much like the cultists or minions, this commoner wants the lycanthropes to take over the hamlet. However, they actively searched for the wolves. They have begun to change physically, and often get quite angry when their former masters die and turn into a werewolf themselves. While they have not yet completed their physical mutation, the Seer and Oracle are fooled into thinking they are a commoner

    Hag

The ancient arcans this person controls are older than all and the oldest of all, allowing them to prevent anyone from using their abilities. They can stop the spiritually guided visionaries from using them and the shrewd detective from investigating anyone. They have decided to render their services to the lycanthropes in hopes of reclaiming the village they once lived in.

    Sorcerer

Since they cannot fully transform into a werewolf, they have learned to control their minds and determine if anyone else has paranormal senses. They help wolves with this information and can more easily spot those trying to defend the village.

    Warlock

The Warlock supports the enemies of the village and can curse the townspeople so that they appear as wolves in the visions of the seer and the oracle. The curse placed on these people cannot be removed and they will spend the rest of their short lives with it...

    Lycan

Blessed or cursed? You can't tell. They are trying to trick the citizens into getting rid of the wolves while still trying to hide their true identity... Should wolves aim at them, they will feel the energy coming from them and then turn into one can.

    Turncoat

This person only cares about themselves. They will shift their allegiance to anyone as long as they can derive something useful from it. They will not hesitate to betray their friends to get their funds as long as they survive with the allegiance they have made...

    Vengeful Ghost

Unbeknownst to all, including themselves, these cityfolk bear a rare curse: hatred of death itself. Should they be slain, the gates of hell will not open to them, and instead they will be forced to live in the world between worlds to hike. In order to take revenge on those who sent them to Hell before Hell, they will pursue the citizens and kill those they believe have killed them one by one.

    amnesiac

So much has happened in such a short time that this person doesn't even remember who they are. It will take time, but after a few nights of thinking about themselves, they will remember their true role and finally be able to fully contribute to their goal. Although they don't know what they really are, they will believe they are on the side of the village and against wolves.

    Clon

Nameless and powerless, they decided to choose someone else in the village and began imitating everything they did. Should that person die, they will have learned enough from their actions to adopt their previous abilities and act as if they were that person. As long as they remain nameless, they don't care who ends up controlling the village as long as they live.

    Crazy shaman

Similar to the shaman, they possess totems and can pass them on to different citizens, having different effects on people. However, unlike the Shaman, they have many more totems to choose from, although they haven't done their job of sorting and will never know which totem it is. They don't care which side manages to control the village as long as they survive the fight.

    Fool

A hamlet plagued by lycanthropes, where no one trusts anyone. What kind of nightmare could this be? It must be a nightmare, it can't be anything else, this person is convinced of it. They want the nightmare to stop and for the village to hang them so they can escape this place. Should the village eventually hang them, the fool's ghost will escape and everyone will wonder if their life is real, causing most of them to pass out and the fool will effectively have beaten the odds and everyone else will rot.

    Jester

The gates of hell are already open for this sinner, and they must willingly yield to death in order to go through their destiny. Should they be hung by the crowd's decision, they will happily walk to the other side and past the three-headed guard.

    Monster

Under the guise of an ordinary citizen, a greater entity, the monster, will hide among the people. Though seemingly harmless, they will deter wolves attempting to devour the monster. Should either side manage to finally gain or regain control of the place, the monster will reveal its true identity and scare everyone away, effectively giving control of the village to their own.

    Piper

Far and south of the little hamlet, the town of Hamelin was infested with rats. The city had hired a mysterious character, everyone covered in colorful clothes, to get rid of the rats and did this job with great success. However, when the city refused to pay the piper for their services, they began leading the children away from the city, never to return... Eventually, the piper was found and banished from the city. And so the Pied Piper of Hamelin found his way to this small village and decided to take out all the trouble on the townspeople to ultimately take control of the town.

    Cursed Villager

Sometimes a curse inexplicably strikes some members of the village... This causes both the seer's and the oracle's visions to be shrouded in darkness, leading them to believe that the cursed person is a wolf. It is said that a dark spirit is toying with the energy currents that the visionary commoners use and this manages to further confuse them.

    Gunner

After examining some of the slain lycanthropes, the townsfolk found that silver bullets are truly deadly against them, while remaining mostly non-lethal against non-wolves. Some people have acquired a gun and some of these silver bullets to defend themselves. Most of them don't know how to use a gun and sometimes miss when shooting. While their true identities are unknown to most, the mere fact that they hold a weapon capable of killing wolves usually endears them to humans.

    Sharpshooter

Some of the village's gun owners decided that just holding a gun wasn't enough. They began training with regular bullets at various targets, eventually becoming more skilled at aiming and using the weapon. They take good care of her belongings and keep her clean to make sure she's firing straight and not blowing up. Due to their extensive training, if they decide to use it, they will always hit and fatally injure the person they are shooting at.

    Mayor

Once upon a time, before being plagued by strange mutations, the village was as normal as a village could be. This townsman was the last to be elected mayor before it all went down. No one remembers, but should they be hanged according to the wishes of the crowd, they will reveal that fact, and some will remember the trust everyone had in their mayor when the village held the elections. To show this, the village will not hang her for that day.

    Assasine

Determined to do themselves justice, they sometimes sneak out at night and go to execute someone else in their sleep. However, other people might see them and decide that it would be better if they were no longer alive. During the day, they can sometimes slit someone's throat in front of everyone, leading the rest of the village to dispose of them.

    Bureaucrat

A businessman who comes from a place nobody knows. They are able to manipulate some people into making them appear to be far more important than they really are. They have stronger power against those who don't like them as they can trick the rest of the village into hanging someone. However, most don't know if they have another, hidden ability or not...

The origins of the game modes

There are many timelines encompassing the situation of the isolated German hamlet. In any case, one factor remains constant: the citizens must defend their house from the evil werewolves who want to take over it. Their methods aren't always set in stone, however, and occasionally some disruptive visitors will turn the chaos to their own advantage...

    Default

The standard model for the timeline and what most timelines follow. In this case, the seer is the first to face the threat and offer his visions to help the village and separate good from evil. However, the seer soon discovers that their power is not absolute; In some cases, they have tricked the hamlet into hanging innocent citizens who were inexplicably viewed as evil.

To support the crusade against the wolves, the seer recruits the town's shaman, who aids the seer by giving totems to protect and strengthen the innocent citizens while hindering those who are evil. The wench is also an unreliable ally, especially for sleeping with the commoners. However, the influence of the wolves proves to be the dominant force, even when three empowered citizens stand in the way and people turn to them. First, they encounter some cultists who will help them control the village's decisions when enough innocents are hung. However, they soon find that a few traitorous individuals are willing to seek them out directly and undergo mutations to become wolves should the evil presence in the city wane. Faced with all the chaos in such a short amount of time, the village's corrupt totem hoarder - the "crazy" shaman - takes this opportunity to increase the chaos by giving random, potentially harmful totems to whoever he pleases.

When the wolves start raising little wolf cubs to gain more control over the hamlet, the village leaders decide they need a way to quickly and efficiently kill those they suspect are evil. They convince ordinary citizens to practice the art of shooting, armed with special silver bullets that are deadly to wolves. At this point, the town cupid decides it's safe enough for the Sagittarians to resume normal wedding-loving service together. While the town initially welcomes this heartfelt addition to the otherwise dark atmosphere, they soon realize that even innocent townspeople can be corrupted by the power of love, and turn against the village should their lover turn out to be one of the village's enemies. If the lovers are known, the town will often actively attempt to kill the lovers before they can turn the tide in the wolves' favor.

Angered by this development, the wolves recruit a person with the power to transform into a menacing black crow at night and watch the townspeople's nocturnal activity to see if they are one of the city's leaders. However, the town notices the crow and enlists the help of a talented but clumsy detective, who efficiently determines the true nature of every human without a doubt, and later the village's long-lived hunter, who still has some deadly bullets left in her old arsenal, and can end someone's life instantly if they choose. With all these commoners working against them, the wolves recruit a second wolf into the village and the stakes are evened again, but no one knows if larger beings, maybe monsters, lurk in the dark, waiting for their opportunity to win. ..

    Foolish

In an alternate universe, the wolves manage to lure the Seer and brutally murder him by displaying their remains near the city's hanging tree as a grim warning. Horrified by the situation, citizens panic and run through the city crying for the end of days. As the vast majority of townspeople eventually calm down, one decides that the situation is far too grim to understand and begins to question their very existence. In order to leave the world, this person searches for the village to hang so her spirit can escape and embrace the town with the same existential crisis that has plagued the last days of her life and that will inevitably cause everyone, wolves and commoners equally wasting.

Some village leaders eventually learn about the nervous breakdown of this so-called fool and decide to take action. The seer's faithful disciple, the Oracle, steps forward with the harlot to guide the village in its goal of eliminating the wolves, while the jester is left to their deliberations. The hunter, not amused by the jester's whimsical antics, also leaves home early to not only eliminate the wolves sooner, but also the jester if they are stupid enough to arouse their suspicions. Also aware of the Jester's threat, the Wolves recruit their second lycanthrope early on in order to eliminate them as quickly as possible. Soon after, however, a shaman joins the fight to counter this threat. Next to the shaman is the unnamed but dangerous clone who only mimics one person but may lie to multiple people in order to gain information for anyone they copy. Only then do the wolves raise their young and the village reacts by training marksmen as usual. In a quest for more power, both sides face off against the hamlet's magical sect. Citizens recruit the diviner, who can discern an individual's orientation and mark them as decisively good, evil, or neutral. The werewolves recruit the sorcerer, who can recognize the seer's faithful follower and the augur, and allow the wolves to make examples of them as well. As the hamlet's leaders continue their detective work in finding the werewolves, one of the townsfolk holds onto her mayoral badge in case the town begins to suspect their former elected leader...

    Mad

On a dark, rainy night in this universe's hamlet, between the lightning strikes illuminating the village, the all-too-familiar home of the village's totem hoarder bursts into view. As the shaman creates more totems for emergencies, he mixes up the wrong potions and BOOM! A cloud of inept white smoke forms, nearly suffocating them to death. The smoke eventually clears and the shaman appears to be physically fine, but experiences drastic changes in his once calm state of mind, driving her insane. The shaman decides to embark on a different path in life, less trodden by others existing in a magical world: the journey of a mad scientist. This scientist soon begins mixing new deadly solutions never known before to satiate his corrupted brain's dangerously creative urges.

The mad scientist is still several years in the future and still in his basement creating dangerous chemical compounds. No longer for fun, but for a twisted form of self-defense against the new threat of werewolves and cultists, or anyone who dares kill them. These malevolent intentions and her corrupt state of mind are in conflict with the Seer, who sees her as a threat to the village that must be eliminated, forcing her to remain hidden. Occasionally, the mad scientist can pull himself together to work with the seer, but soon the wolves outed by the seer pretend to be mad scientists, causing further suspicion in the village. Over time, some townspeople are so threatened by the mad scientist that they turn to the wolves for protection and betray the village on their journey, while the village's aspiring gunners carry only one bullet for fear they might accidentally shoot someone who can blast their bodies with unstable solutions in a sadistic act of revenge. The wolves soon recruit the worker-crow early on to scout the village and make sure they turn the seer on someone who could potentially kill them. The drunken village also appears as a foil for the mad scientist, who has no qualms about being open about his identity or even dying at the hands of wolves.

As the days go by, very few people with special powers take on the threat as they all fear their lives close to the elusive mad scientist. The detective steps in to identify the growing number of cultists and wolves in the village, but with very few other village leaders, they are often an easy target. The mad scientist's corrupt spirit spreads even to commoners, turning them into vengeful spirits should they die, contributing to the Hamlet's overwhelming suffocation and unrest. The village becomes oversaturated with commoners, resulting in innocents dying one by one while days pass with little discussion or action due to the lack of village leaders. And to think that all of this happened because a shaman one day mixed the wrong potions and messed up their own psyche... how will the village ever survive this ordeal?

    Random

Below the hamlet in this timeline is a fugitive mine that contains radioactive material. While the cave has never bothered anyone, citizens got greedy and rushed into this mine to sell precious metals found there. However, as they dig deeper and deeper, they hit a critical pressure point outside the mine, causing it to explode violently, releasing lethal radiation into the village. After the initial flash of light has subsided, some lie dead while others seem untouched, at least until dawn, and the howling of werewolves can be heard in the distance...

The radiation burst severely mutated citizens, granting them various abilities, some of which are completely undocumented. Those with stronger abilities conclude that the city is now threatened by newly turned werewolves and adjust their plans accordingly. Given the variety of powers everyone now has, it's hard to trust anyone for fear they might be secretly a village enemy, or worse, get bitten and turn into wolves themselves. How will the hamlet survive this siege?

    Chaos

Similar to the random timeline, the unfortunate hamlet sits above a radioactive mine. The foolish citizens explore this cave in search of fortune and glory, but a mining trip has gone wrong and BOOM! The pressure point collapses and the entire mine violently explodes, releasing lethal radiation into the village and everyone faints. When the townsfolk wake up, they believe everything is fine until the howling of werewolves is heard in the nearby forest. Worse, whoever's left still convulses in pain and their horrified expressions deepen as they slowly realize the mutation is far from over.

The initial burst of radiation had given everyone supernatural powers and altered their mental states. However, the fallout persists, mutating citizens more and more. Every day, citizens wake up in a cold sweat and examine their mirrors to find out what new monster they've become overnight. First, the whole city drafts a non-aggression treaty together under the logic that even those who had turned into werewolves can mutate back into ordinary citizens, so no lynching is needed as long as no one dies overnight. However, over time, some commoners develop a perverse addiction to shape-shifting. As the radiation engulfs their lives, turning their hair and eyes all sorts of ridiculous colors and physically paralyzing them, they decide to enjoy the rest of their short existence as much as possible, abusing their powers as many times as possible before it's inevitable Collapse. In other words, they want to fuck shit and watch the world burn. Deaths begin overnight, and vociferous citizens call for lynchings, starting the cycle of hate all over again. This time it's made worse by the fact that everyone doesn't know which side they'll end up on. Even if the results benefit them one day, it can bite them back the next. As the village grows more chaotic, the once peaceful but desperate town has turned into a maelstrom of death, distrust and paranoia doomed to fall on itself in the near future.
